Details of the Incident

The incident occurred near Phabeni Gate at a designated braai site within the park. The victim, who has not yet been publicly identified, was part of a group staying outside the park but had entered to participate in a bush braai hosted by a private company authorized to operate within the reserve.

South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed the death in a statement reported by ENCA, expressing “deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult time.”

Police Investigation Underway

South African police have opened cases of negligent homicide and reckless handling of a firearm in connection with the incident, according to The Citizen newspaper. Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge.

The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday evening, as noted by East Coast Radio. The Canadian government has been contacted for confirmation and further details, with National Post reaching out to the Federal Ministry of Global Affairs.

This tragic event underscores the importance of strict firearm safety protocols, particularly in wildlife areas where visitors may be unfamiliar with local regulations and terrain.
