Apple Raises Prices on iPads and MacBooks, Citing Surging Memory Chip Costs Driven by AI Demand

Apple has announced price increases across a range of its products, including iPads and MacBooks, pointing to a sharp rise in the cost of memory chips fueled by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centers worldwide.

The company said in a statement that the consumer electronics industry is facing an “unprecedented challenge” as AI infrastructure demands an extraordinary volume of memory and storage components that are also essential in devices like laptops and tablets. The resulting supply chain shortage has put significant pressure on global chip availability.

“We have never seen component prices rise so much and so quickly,” Apple said. While the company noted it had previously absorbed cost increases to shield customers, it confirmed that it must now pass some of those costs along. The iPhone, however, will not be affected by the current round of price adjustments.

MacBook Neo Price Jumps Significantly

Among the products impacted is Apple’s MacBook Neo, the company’s lowest-priced laptop option. When the MacBook Neo launched in Canada in March 2026, it was priced at $799 for regular customers and $679 for students. According to the Canadian Apple Store, those prices have since risen to $949 and $819, respectively.

Apple CEO Tim Cook had previously signaled the financial pressure during an April conference call with analysts, warning that the chip shortage meant Apple faced “significantly higher memory costs” and that those costs would have an “increasing impact” on the business.

Cook had also expressed enthusiasm about the MacBook Neo’s launch, saying customer response was “simply outstanding” and that demand exceeded expectations. “We underestimated the enthusiasm,” he said, speaking roughly a month after the device debuted during a turbulent economic period marked by rising consumer prices and energy cost concerns linked to the Iran war.

What the Price Increases Mean for Canadian Consumers

The higher prices place a notable burden on budget-conscious buyers, particularly students and minimum-wage workers. With Canada’s federal minimum wage currently set at $18.15 per hour for workers in federally regulated private-sector industries, a student would need to work at least 45 hours — roughly one full week of eight-hour workdays over five days — to afford the $819 MacBook Neo before taxes and other fees.

For non-students paying the full $949 price, the figure climbs to a minimum of 52 hours of work, representing more than a week of full-time employment under the same criteria. These timelines could stretch further for consumers interested in more premium Apple devices beyond the entry-level Neo model.

In practice, many Canadians earning the federal minimum wage will face even longer savings periods, as everyday necessities such as food, shelter, transportation, and other non-discretionary expenses continue to strain household budgets. Provincial and territorial minimum wage rates may also vary, along with industry-specific pay scales.

iPhone Price Increases May Be Coming

While Apple has held iPhone prices steady for now, industry analysts suggest it may only be a matter of time before the company’s flagship product is affected. Nabila Popal, senior research director at IDC, told Reuters that “the iPhone will not be spared” and that a price increase is “imminent.”

Popal noted that Apple’s decision to announce price hikes ahead of the fall iPhone launch was strategic, ensuring that the headline news at launch centers on the value of new features rather than cost increases.

Apple acknowledged that the price adjustments are unwelcome news for consumers but said it is “working tirelessly to find solutions” to manage rising component costs in the months ahead.
