Canada approves first generic semaglutide shot for weight loss

Health Canada Approves First Generic Semaglutide for Weight Loss

Health Canada has approved the first generic version of semaglutide injection specifically indicated for weight loss, marking a significant development in the accessibility of obesity treatment medications in the country.

Svemia: A Generic Alternative to Wegovy

Canadian pharmaceutical company Apotex will market its generic product under the name Svemia. The drug is a generic version of Wegovy, the branded weight-loss medication manufactured by Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk. Svemia is administered as a once-weekly injection and is intended for individuals aged 12 years and older. According to Health Canada, it is approved as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight control.

Third Generic Semaglutide Approved in Canada

Svemia represents the third generic semaglutide product to receive approval from Health Canada. However, it is the first to be approved specifically for weight loss. The two previously approved generic semaglutide products were authorized for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. Those earlier approvals included generic versions of Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic, produced by India-based Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Apotex, both of which were cleared earlier in 2026.

More Generic Semaglutide Products on the Horizon

Health Canada is currently reviewing six additional applications from various companies seeking approval for generic semaglutide products. The department expects to make further decisions on these applications in the coming weeks and months, which could lead to increased competition and potentially lower costs for patients seeking semaglutide-based treatments in Canada.
