Spain’s Torres scores in extra time to secure the country’s second World Cup title

Spain Wins World Cup with 1‑0 Victory Over Argentina

Spain secured a 1‑0 win over Argentina in the final, with Ferran Torres netting the decisive goal in the 106th minute. The strike, his first of the tournament, came after he entered the match as a substitute and placed a left‑footed shot just under the crossbar, sealing the championship for La Roja.

Ferran Torres’ Moment of Brilliance

Torres pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area and calmly finished, delivering the winning goal that ended Argentina’s quest for a back‑to‑back title. He described the effort as a collective achievement, saying it was “scored by 47 million people,” reflecting the support of the entire Spanish nation.

Messi’s Final World Cup Appearance

Lionel Messi, 39, played his last World Cup match, a bittersweet conclusion to a legendary international career. After the final whistle he was visibly emotional, acknowledging that Spain simply played better on the day. His résumé includes a 2022 World Cup crown, Olympic gold, two Copa América titles and numerous individual accolades.

Spain’s Defensive Dominance

Throughout the tournament Spain conceded only a single goal in eight games, setting a new record for the fewest goals allowed by a World Cup champion. Their disciplined approach limited Argentina to one strike in the second half of extra time, while Spain itself dominated possession and created numerous scoring chances.

Historical Streaks and Milestones

Spain extended an unbeaten run to 38 matches—29 wins and nine draws—the longest such streak ever recorded for a European side, surpassing Italy’s 37‑game run from 2018‑2021. The victory also made Luis de la Fuente, 65, the oldest coach ever to guide a team to a World Cup title. Moreover, Spain became the first nation to hold both the men’s and women’s World Cup crowns simultaneously, following the women’s triumph in 2023.

Match Dynamics and Key Incidents

Spain controlled the early stages, taking nine of the first ten corners and forcing Argentina to defend deep. The Argentine side struggled to create clear chances, with goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez making a tournament‑tying 12 saves. Mid‑way through the second half, Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving Argentina with ten men for the remainder of the game. Despite the numerical advantage, Argentina could not find an equaliser, and the final moments saw a high ball from Messi’s corner that sailed over substitute Giuliano Simeone’s head.
