Health Canada Issues Recall for Custom‑Made Blinds Over Strangulation Risk

Health Canada has announced a recall of custom‑made and removable blinds that include a chain and cord guard, citing a serious strangulation risk for young children.

Products Covered by the Recall

The recall impacts five specific models sold by Montreal‑based Prime Custom Blinds: blackout blinds (model PCBTB), solar blinds (model PCBTS), alternating fabric blinds with 65% light filtering (model PCBAL65), 85% light filtering (model PCBAL85) and 95% light filtering (model PCBAL95).

Health Canada’s Findings

According to Health Canada, the recalled blinds do not meet the requirements of the corded window covering regulations and can allow cords to be pulled around a child’s neck, creating a potentially fatal strangulation hazard.

What Consumers Should Do

Anyone who owns one of the affected blinds should stop using them immediately and contact Prime Custom Blinds at 514‑552‑1026, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT, or email info@pcblinds.com to arrange a repair kit.

Sales Volume and Background

The company reported that from December 2019 to July 2026, approximately 6,500 units of these made‑to‑order blinds were sold across Canada, with each unit varying in size, fabric, and colour to meet customer specifications.

Incident Reports

As of July 14, the company had not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the recalled products in Canada, according to Health Canada.

Regulatory Context

Health Canada has recommended cordless window coverings since the 2021 regulations took effect, noting that prior to that an average of one child per year died from strangulation by window‑covering cords. Canada’s window‑covering standards are among the most stringent worldwide and apply to both custom and standard products sold in the country.
