Summer sees a dip in blood donations, but reserves are already low
Typically, Canadian Blood Services experiences a drop in donations during the summer months as donors go on vacation and become distracted by other plans. However, the agency reports that current reserves are still below normal levels and are not sustainable for patient care without chargebacks.
Recent decline since June
Numbers have been falling since June 1, prompting the organization to add more weekend appointment slots in an effort to encourage donors to “roll up their sleeves.”
Supply has dropped about 20%
According to Ron Vezina, vice‑president of donor engagement and corporate reputation at Canadian Blood Services, the blood supply has fallen by roughly 20 % in just a few weeks, creating an urgent need for more donors to reverse the decline.
Weekly appointment target
Canadian Blood Services estimates that about 18,000 booked donation appointments are required each week across the country to meet hospital demand.
Missed appointments
In the past six weeks, between 1,500 and 2,500 appointments per week have gone unbooked, meaning that existing stocks have been relied upon to meet patient needs.
Blood shelf life and urgency
Blood has a shelf life of only 42 days, so donations made today will quickly be needed by patients. The agency notes that there are currently limited days available for several blood groups, a situation that is unsustainable for patient care if the trend is not reversed.
Need for all blood types
To replenish supplies and keep up with hospital demand, donors of all blood types are needed, especially as the August long weekend approaches and trauma cases and urgent care needs could rise.
How to help
Existing appointments should be kept, and those unable to attend can cancel in advance to allow another donor to take the slot. Additional weekend appointments have been added at many donor centres, and whole‑blood donation is available at several plasma centres.
Call to action
“A strong, healthy Canada depends on people caring for one another,” Vezina said. “Whether you’re a new or returning donor, now is the time to make an appointment—better yet, bring a friend and experience what you get when you donate together.”
Appointments can be booked at Blood.ca, through the GiveBlood app for Android or iOS, or by calling 1‑888‑2‑DONATE.
