Early Years with the Toronto Maple Leafs

Born into a family steeped in hockey history, Kerry Day was just 11 when he joined the 1945 Toronto Maple Leafs as a “mascot,” standing alongside players, coaches and management while the team captured the Stanley Cup.

His father, Hap Day, served as the club’s captain, coach and general manager, giving young Kerry a front‑row view of the game’s strategies and intricacies during trips to Maple Leaf Gardens.

Post‑War Success and the Stanley Cup Tradition

Kerry’s name was again engraved on the Cup in 1949, marking the final of three consecutive post‑war championships won by Toronto.

While the NHL permits families of team personnel to be included on the trophy, Kerry’s connection to the sport was deeper than that of later mascots such as the Dundon children, who were only seven at the time of their nomination.

Later Life and Community Involvement

After succeeding his father in the tool‑handle business, Kerry became its owner and ran the enterprise until he retired at age 52.

He devoted much of his later years to fundraising for the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation, helping expand essential health services for the community.

Married to Elizabeth Anne for 65 years, he raised two great‑grandchildren and remained active in local charitable efforts.

Death and Remembered Legacy

Kerry Day passed away at 92 on July 12 in St. Thomas, Ontario, according to his family obituary.

The obituary highlighted his lifelong immersion in hockey, noting that he witnessed the Leafs’ golden era victories and stood behind the dugout with many of the sport’s legends.

His legacy endures through the stories he shared with family and friends, and through the continued remembrance of his role as a mascot during one of the NHL’s most celebrated periods.
