Alek Manoah’s Troubling Triple-A Performance

In less than four years, the former Toronto Blue Jays right-hander, once a Cy Young Award finalist, has fallen to the bottom of the pitching hierarchy.

Statistical Decline

Manoah opened the season with the Los Angeles Angels but was sent down after three appearances in which he posted a 9.82 ERA over 7.1 innings, issuing eight walks.

His nine starts for the Salt Lake Bees produced a 15.80 ERA, the worst mark in the past 20 years for any Triple‑A pitcher with at least five starts and 20 innings, according to Fangraphs.

Across his last four outings he allowed 28 earned runs in 9.2 innings, walking 36 batters while recording only seven strikeouts.

The only bright spot was that he managed to earn a win despite the disastrous numbers.

Possible Next Steps for the Angels

Because Manoah is not on the Angels’ 40‑man roster, he can be released at any time, but the club’s current roster situation could lead to a recall for spot starts.

Commentators have noted that the introduction of the pitch clock may have disrupted his rhythm, as he traditionally preferred longer intervals between pitches.
