The amateur investor: Just make an ETF and relax

Why ETFs Are a Smart Choice for Retail Investors

After covering taxes and daily expenses, many Canadians find a modest amount of extra cash they’d like to invest, yet they feel unsure which individual stock to pick.

An exchange‑traded fund, or ETF, solves that dilemma by bundling many securities into a single vehicle that you can buy and sell just like a stock.

Unlike a mutual fund, which executes trades only once per day after the market closes, an ETF’s price updates continuously during market hours, letting you enter or exit at any time.

ETFs also tend to carry lower management expense ratios, though some may require a trading commission, making them a cost‑effective option for most retail portfolios.

ETF Basics

An ETF pools investor money to purchase a diversified mix of assets—ranging from broad market indices to specific sectors—then issues shares that trade on an exchange.

Because the underlying basket contains dozens or hundreds of holdings, the performance of a single stock has limited impact on the overall fund value.

ETF vs Mutual Funds

Mutual funds are priced once daily at the end of the trading session, while ETFs are priced continuously, offering intraday flexibility.

Management fees for ETFs are typically lower than those of mutual funds, though investors may incur a commission when buying or selling shares.

Popular Canadian and U.S. ETFs to Consider

BMO S&P 500 ETF (ZSP)

The BMO S&P 500 ETF, ticker ZSP, closed at $114.38 on July 17 and offers a quarterly dividend of $0.24, representing a 0.77 % yield.

Its top five holdings include Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Google, giving exposure to some of the world’s largest technology companies.

The fund’s management expense ratio is 0.09 %, and Morningstar rates it 4 out of 5 stars.

Being a Canadian‑dollar‑denominated product, ZSP is unhedged, meaning its value moves directly with U.S. dollar fluctuations.

Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VFV)

Vanguard’s Canadian‑listed S&P 500 ETF, ticker VFV, tracks the same index as the U.S. VOO fund but is wrapped in a Canadian structure.

Both VFV and ZSP share the same 0.09 % MER, yet VFV requires a higher initial investment of about $185.25 per share.

Despite the higher price point, Canadian investors often view VFV as a convenient way to gain U.S. market exposure without dealing with foreign currency conversion.

Vanguard FTSE Canadian High Dividend Yield ETF (VDY)

VDY trades around $78.79 and focuses on Canadian companies that pay strong dividends.

Its leading holdings are the big five banks—Royal Bank, TD, BMO, Enbridge and Scotiabank—along with major energy firms, delivering a monthly dividend of $0.18 and a 2.76 % yield.

The fund’s expense ratio is 0.22 %, and Morningstar gives it a perfect 5‑star rating.

Because of its concentration in financial and energy sectors, VDY may be more sensitive to sector‑specific market moves, making it a suitable entry point for TFSA or RRSP accounts.

Schwab US Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD)

SCHD, priced at $32.90 in U.S. dollars, tracks the Dow Jones US Dividend 100 Index and targets high‑quality dividend payers.

Key holdings include Merck & Co., Home Depot, UnitedHealth, Amgen and Abbott Laboratories, and the ETF distributes a quarterly dividend of $0.25, equating to a 3.19 % yield.

Its low 0.06 % expense ratio and a 3‑star Morningstar rating make it an attractive choice for Canadian investors seeking U.S. dividend exposure within an RRSP to avoid U.S. withholding tax.

Overall, these ETFs illustrate how a single fund can provide diversified market exposure, steady income, and cost efficiency, helping retail investors build a balanced portfolio without needing to pick individual stocks.
