Saskatchewan Roughriders Edge Calgary Stampeders in Overtime Thriller

CALGARY — The Saskatchewan Roughriders held off a furious late rally from the Calgary Stampeders to claim a dramatic 40-37 overtime victory on a stormy Saturday night in the CFL.

Backup quarterback Tommy Stevens proved to be the hero for Saskatchewan, scoring two short-yardage touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime. The Roughriders had led for much of the contest, but Calgary quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. connected with Tevin Jones in the end zone in the final minute of regulation to tie the game and force extra time.

Weather and Game Conditions

While kick-off took place under dry, sunny skies, conditions deteriorated significantly during the game. Wind gusts exceeding 50 km/h swayed the goalposts and heavily influenced game management for both teams. Saskatchewan head coach Corey Mace joked about the tension, saying his jaw hurt from chewing gum so hard during the contest.

Key Performances

Kian Schaffer-Baker was a standout for the Roughriders, catching two touchdowns and accumulating 295 receiving yards over his first two games of the season. KeeSean Johnson also caught a touchdown, while running back AJ Ouellette rushed for 84 yards and contributed a two-point conversion. Kicker Alex Hale scored eight points, including field goals from 27 and 38 yards, though he missed a 47-yard attempt due to the wind.

For the Stampeders, Quincy Vaughn scored two short-yard touchdowns, and Tyreik McAllister electrified the crowd with a 120-yard touchdown return on a missed field goal. Dedrick Mills, last season’s CFL leading rusher, finished with 103 yards.

Game Flow and Turning Points

Calgary’s offense struggled early, managing just eight net yards in the first quarter. Saskatchewan built a commanding 31-17 lead in the third quarter after a nine-play, 82-yard drive capped by a three-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Harris to Johnson, followed by Ouellette’s two-point conversion.

The first half ended dramatically. After an 81-yard drive against the wind resulted in another Schaffer-Baker touchdown, Calgary’s McAllister returned the ensuing kick 120 yards for a touchdown, providing a crucial lifeline for the Stampeders.

Despite trailing, Calgary kept fighting. Adams orchestrated a nine-play, 88-yard drive in the final minute, culminating in a touchdown pass to Jones with just 34 seconds remaining to tie the game at 37-37.

Overtime Decider

In overtime, both teams traded field goals — Jude McAtamney hit from 17 yards for Calgary, and Hale responded from 38 yards for Saskatchewan. After McAtamney made another 24-yard attempt, Stevens plunged in from one yard out to secure the victory for the defending Gray Cup champions.

“There are a lot of people who would like to be in our locker room and I’m very, very grateful to be here,” said Stevens, who played his first three CFL seasons in Calgary before joining Saskatchewan.

Quarterback Statistics

Trevor Harris completed 23 of 36 pass attempts for 349 yards and three touchdowns for Saskatchewan. Adams completed 20 of 30 attempts for 254 yards and one touchdown for Calgary.

All of Saskatchewan’s touchdowns were scored against the wind, and their long scoring drives provided the added benefit of keeping Calgary’s offense off the field and unable to take advantage of favorable wind conditions.

Looking Ahead

The victory improves Saskatchewan to 2-0 on the season, while Calgary drops to 0-2 for just the second time since 2009. The Stampeders suffered another heartbreaker after a narrow 30-28 loss to Winnipeg the previous week.

“A resilient group, we just have to find a way to win,” said Stampeders head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson. “We were probably outplayed, to be honest, but we had our chances. We kept fighting. We kept working. We drew, went to overtime. A decision here, a decision there, a chance here, a chance there.”

The Roughriders host the Toronto Argonauts (1-1) on Friday, while the Stampeders visit the BC Lions (0-2) on Saturday, June 27, in Kelowna, BC.
