What does love have to do with it? How Canadians underestimate the cost of marriage

Wedding Costs Surprise Canadians

While many Canadians estimate that a wedding will cost about $19,000, the reality often exceeds those expectations. A recent BMO report highlights that the financial planning required during a marriage can be far more extensive than most people anticipate.

What the Numbers Show

The breakdown of typical wedding expenses includes $4,884 for food and drinks, $4,201 for the venue, $2,951 for clothing, hair and makeup, $2,834 for travel and accommodation, $1,713 for decorations, $1,603 for entertainment, and $1,648 for photography and videography, according to the BMO Real Financial Progress Index.

Planning Beyond the Ceremony

Nearly two‑thirds (63%) of respondents say the wedding process demands more financial planning than they originally thought. A substantial portion (43%) feels stressed about the financial burden placed on loved ones such as bridesmaids, groomsmen and wedding guests. Almost half (40%) consider attending friends’ or family’s weddings a major source of financial stress, with 49% of Millennials reporting the greatest strain.

Divorce Financial Realities

The average cost of a divorce or separation is reported at $4,863, a figure that does not include property division or ongoing support payments. More than half (57%) of those who have divorced or separated say financial disagreements extended the process and added stress. Significant expenses arise from child‑related costs (26%), property division (25%), spousal support (22%), debt division (15%) and legal fees (12%).

Prenuptial Considerations

While 52% of divorced or separated individuals believe a prenuptial agreement would have eased the separation, 77% have never obtained one. Reasons cited include a belief that it was unnecessary (67%), discomfort discussing finances (10%) and uncertainty about how to initiate the process (10%).

“Financial planning shouldn’t end with a yes; it’s also about building resilience to unforeseen events and unexpected costs,” says Tony Tintinalli, head of specialty sales at BMO. Open communication, shared goals and guidance from a trusted advisor can help couples create a plan that supports their financial well‑being at every stage of life.
