After protests against the military leadership, Zelenskyy replaces the head of the Ukrainian army

Zelensky Dismisses Army Chief and Installs New Commander

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the removal of General Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander‑in‑chief of Ukraine’s armed forces and named Mykhailo Drapatyi as his successor. The decision came after days of mass demonstrations in Kyiv and other cities demanding Syrskyi’s resignation.

Reasons Behind the Shake‑up

Zelensky said the change followed a series of meetings with military leaders after public anger grew over what many viewed as an outdated, top‑down command style. Protesters called for the reinstatement of former defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who they see as a champion of modernisation, and for the removal of Syrskyi, whom they described as embodying a Soviet‑era military culture.

New Leadership and Strategic Tasks

Drapatyi, who previously served in senior army posts, pledged to work responsibly and with respect for the troops currently defending the country. Zelensky instructed him and other commanders to produce an updated defence strategy that includes reform of the corps system, faster delivery of weapons and drones, stronger air‑defence capabilities and a clearer mobilisation plan.

Context of the Crisis

The turmoil began last Thursday when Zelensky reshuffled his wartime cabinet, replacing the prime minister and dismissing defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov after only six months in the role. He said an irreconcilable rift had developed between Fedorov and Syrskyi, making it impossible for the two to resolve their dispute.

Public and Military Reaction

Fedorov publicly accused Syrskyi of blocking reforms and fostering a hierarchical leadership culture, noting that soldiers and veterans had complained about high casualty rates in recent offensives. The dismissal sparked thousands of demonstrators to take to the streets, while the air force’s deputy commander resigned in protest, warning that the move could weaken Ukraine’s air‑defence. Veterans, soldiers on leave and numerous senior officers also voiced opposition to Syrskyi on social media, with some referring to him by the nickname “Butcher” linked to the prolonged battle for Bakhmut.

Allegations and Criticism

An investigative report by the newspaper Babel in June alleged abuse within the Skelia Assault Regiment, a unit closely associated with Syrskyi, and documented a disproportionate number of recruit fatalities. These findings further tarnished his public image and fuelled the demands for change.

Future Outlook

While the new army chief inherits a force facing intense combat operations, including defence of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Kursk, Zelensky emphasised the need for rapid reforms to improve soldier safety and operational effectiveness. The coming weeks will test whether the appointed leadership can address the grievances that triggered the protests and stabilize the military command structure.
