First Drive Across the New Gordie Howe Bridge

On Monday, July 27, 2026, Marvin Diotte of LaSalle steered his restored 1925 Ford Model T onto the newly opened Gordie Howe International Bridge, marking the first public crossing of the $6.4 billion structure.

Family Legacy on Four Wheels

At 74, Diotte traveled with his grandsons Micah Hacagy, 14, and Camden Brown, 12, hoping the outing would create lasting memories for both himself and the children.

Customs Officers Capture the Moment

After reaching the U.S. side, Customs and Border Protection officers stepped outside with their phones to photograph the vintage vehicle, a sight that continued as Diotte drove further into Michigan.

Enthusiastic Reception on I-75

The Model T, capable of a top speed of roughly 30 to 35 mph, drew waves, thumbs‑up gestures and appreciative honks from drivers on Interstate 75, who praised the historic car rather than its pace.

An Unexpected Return Journey

Although Diotte intended to return to Windsor via the Gordie Howe Bridge, he instead headed north on I‑75, spotted a sign for the Ambassador Bridge, and decided to take that route home.

Century‑Old Vehicle, Family Heritage

The 101‑year‑old Model T has been in Diotte’s family for decades; his father spent two and a half years restoring it, and the car originally belonged to his father’s 1927 Model T before being passed down through generations.

Creating a New Chapter

Diotte said the crossing added another chapter to the car’s story, and his grandchildren looked forward to taking photos and sharing the experience with friends.

Hope for Future Generations

He hopes that when his grandchildren become grandparents themselves, they will recount how they “walked their Pepe over that bridge when it first opened,” preserving the memory for years to come.
