Quebec Sees Sharp Rise in Cyclosporiasis Cases

Dr. Donald Vinh, a professor of medicine at McGill University, warns that health professionals should not be complacent about the growing number of cyclosporiasis cases.

Record Numbers in 2026

According to the Ministry of Health and Social Services, 140 cases were reported in Quebec between May 1 and July 21, compared with only 40 cases in the same period last year.

What Is Cyclosporiasis?

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the parasite Cyclospora. The parasite spreads when people consume food or drink contaminated with the organism.

Symptoms and Treatment

Typical symptoms include watery diarrhea, abdominal bloating, and loss of appetite. While there is no specific antiviral therapy, doctors can provide fluid replacement, correct electrolyte imbalances, and prescribe an antibiotic that is effective against the parasite.

Seasonal Pattern and Travel Link

The disease tends to appear each summer and is often associated with travel to regions where the parasite is more common. This year, the majority of Quebec cases have been linked to travel in Mexico.

Public Health Assessment

The Public Health Agency of Canada says no active outbreaks of Cyclospora are under investigation in Canada. Dr. Vinh notes that the increase reflects potential weaknesses in food safety surveillance rather than a reason for public panic.

Food Safety, Climate Change, and Outbreaks

Warmer temperatures may lengthen rainy seasons, creating conditions that favor the parasite’s survival in the environment. Dr. Vinh points out that the recent surge follows a gradual rise in cases over several years, culminating in a sharp jump in 2026.

U.S. Data Highlights

Between May 1 and July 24, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control recorded 4,173 domestic cyclosporiasis cases, many of which were tied to contaminated iceberg lettuce from central Mexico. On July 17, 2026, Taylor Farms initiated a recall of all iceberg lettuce from that region.

Advice for Consumers

Health experts advise that the public continue to eat fruits and vegetables, as they offer significant health benefits. If a product is recalled, it should be discarded immediately; otherwise, thorough washing under running water can reduce risk. Fear should not override evidence‑based decisions.
