Is BlackBerry “back”? Former smartphone maker reaches important profit milestone

BlackBerry Reaches Major Profit Milestone After Nine Years

Former smartphone maker BlackBerry has reached a significant financial milestone, reporting its first quarter in nine years with positive operating cash flow. The achievement means the company’s core business is now generating more revenue than it spends, marking a turning point in its years-long transformation away from mobile devices.

BlackBerry’s stock surged approximately 20 percent on Bay Street following the earnings release, reflecting renewed investor confidence in the Ontario-based technology company’s strategic direction.

QNX Software Business Drives Growth

At the heart of BlackBerry’s turnaround is its QNX software business, which saw revenue increase by 26 percent year-over-year last quarter. QNX is an advanced embedded software system widely used in automotive and industrial technologies, with a particular emphasis on safety and security.

Kingsley Crane, managing director at Canaccord Genuity who focuses on software research, noted that QNX plays a critical but often invisible role in modern vehicles. “Everything related to an infotainment center, console or music console is based on QNX’s safety-first capabilities,” Crane said. He added that demand for these technologies is also growing in industrial and healthcare applications.

For nine years, QNX largely cost more money than it generated. Thursday’s earnings release marked the first time the division posted a quarter in which revenue exceeded expenses — a development Crane described as a signal that the company is “back.”

Cybersecurity Revenue and Government Contracts

Beyond QNX, BlackBerry’s cybersecurity business has become a meaningful revenue generator. The company has secured contracts with government agencies, including a significant expansion with the Canadian federal government.

In March, Ottawa announced an expanded partnership with BlackBerry through Shared Services Canada to provide secure voice, messaging, and file-sharing services for approved government users. This deal underscores the continued trust that federal institutions place in BlackBerry’s security expertise.

The Long Road From Smartphones to Software

BlackBerry’s pivot away from smartphones has been neither quick nor smooth. In 2013, the company began shifting its focus toward software and cybersecurity as Apple’s iPhone redefined the smartphone market and BlackBerry struggled to compete. The transition was marked by financial losses, thousands of job cuts, and periods when bankruptcy seemed like a real possibility.

BlackBerry released its last native device running its own operating system in 2015. The company subsequently launched a few devices powered by Android software and other third-party components before shipping its final licensed smartphone in 2018. In 2022, BlackBerry discontinued support services for its legacy devices, effectively closing the chapter on its hardware era.

Analysts Say the Future Looks Bright

Despite the challenges of the transition period, analysts are optimistic about BlackBerry’s trajectory. Crane acknowledged that the road included setbacks and strategic adjustments along the way but said the market is now responding positively.

“I think the market is telling you they’re back,” Crane said. “The public is realizing that BlackBerry is used in a lot of places that you might not see as well as on a smartphone. So yeah, it’s definitely back. I think the future is bright for the company.”
