Lauchlan Whelan Signs with Windsor Spitfires
Fifteen‑year‑old centre Lauchlan Whelan has officially signed his standard player agreement with the Windsor Spitfires, completing the paperwork that follows his selection in last month’s OHL Draft.
Early Life and Hockey Beginnings
Whelan grew up in Cobourg and began skating at age two, stepping onto the ice for organized hockey when he was four.
He spent the previous season with the Quinte Red Devils, where he recorded 32 goals and 54 points in 34 minor‑midget games, playing primarily as a forward.
Family Influence and Alternative Sports
His mother, Toni, hails from New Zealand and originally hoped he would pursue rugby, a sport she played for Team Ontario; she never followed his hockey path.
Outside of hockey, Whelan’s other passion is golf, and he has said he would consider becoming a professional golfer if he ever left the game.
When he is not at the rink, he enjoys spending time at a local track, relishing the chance to relax with friends and family.
Draft Selection and Number Choice
After being chosen in the first round, Whelan worked with equipment manager JR Grant to select a jersey number.
He originally wore number 13 growing up, but that number is unavailable, and after reviewing the list with Grant, he settled on number 19, the same number former Spitfire Ethan Miedema wore during his time with the club.
Miedema, a neighbour and the 2021 first‑round pick, encouraged Whelan after his selection.
Expectations for the Upcoming Season
Whelan is slated to occupy a regular spot in the Spitfires’ lineup for the 2026‑27 season, though his development timeline remains uncertain.
General manager Bill Bowler noted that players progress at different rates and praised Whelan’s work ethic and ability, suggesting he could adapt quickly.
Whelan acknowledges the jump in competition, saying the faster, more mature opposition will require adjustment and that he views the year primarily as a learning experience.
Future Plans and Commitment to Windsor
While other top prospects have committed to NCAA programs, Whelan says he is currently focused on Windsor, grateful for the opportunity the organization has given him.
He adds that he will never turn down a chance that best advances his career, but for now he considers Windsor his home.
