Open Letter Demands New Economic Guardrails

An open letter released on Monday, signed by hundreds of leading economists, computer scientists and technology executives, warns that artificial intelligence could radically reshape the economy within the next decade.

The statement, organized by Stanford University’s Digital Economy Lab, argues that the speed of AI development may outpace the changes seen during the Industrial Revolution, creating both unprecedented opportunities and significant risks.

Signatories include more than 200 economists and AI researchers, among them 16 Nobel Prize laureates, as well as prominent figures such as computer scientist Yoshua Bengio and executives from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI.

“AI could become radically more powerful in the next decade,” the letter says, “which could drive an unprecedented transformation of our economy, larger than the Industrial Revolution but unfolding over a much shorter time frame.”

The authors caution that such rapid change may lead to large‑scale job relocation, while also highlighting potential benefits like higher living standards.

In its four‑sentence call to action, the letter urges leaders to “create the incentives, guardrails and institutions necessary to steer AI in a direction that complements humans and benefits society.”

Yoshua Bengio, a professor at the University of Montreal and AI pioneer, wrote separately that “it is highly plausible that AI will drastically transform our economies” and emphasized the need for collective, democratic decision‑making rather than leaving outcomes to market forces alone.
