Deadly Shooting in Montreal Leaves Officer, Civilian, and Gunman Dead
On Monday, June 22, 2026, a violent attack unfolded in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges district, resulting in the deaths of one police officer, a civilian bystander, and the suspected gunman. The incident began shortly before midday when police responded to 911 calls reporting an armed man seen in the window of a Hilton hotel.
Upon arrival, officers were immediately met with gunfire from a man wearing camouflage clothing and carrying a long gun. Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher stated that the suspect had already moved to the ground floor by the time officers arrived, contradicting the initial report of a shooter in an upper-floor window.
Chaotic Gun Battle Captured on Video
Multiple videos captured the harrowing sequence of events. One 34-second clip, filmed from an upper floor overlooking the street, shows the gunman sneaking around a corner and opening fire on two officers taking cover behind a large planter. An elderly pedestrian is seen walking nearby, seemingly unaware of the danger.
The footage reveals one officer being struck and collapsing in front of a parked Porsche, leaving a visible trail of blood. A second video, recorded at street level, shows the wounded officer attempting to crawl before becoming motionless. His body, still clutching his service pistol, was later seen in post-incident images.
Bystander Caught in Crossfire
In a particularly disturbing moment, a passerby in a black T-shirt attempts to take cover with a second officer behind the same planter. He is then seen falling to the ground after being struck by gunfire. It remains unclear whether he was hit by the active shooter or by police fire. The officer reportedly pointed her weapon at the man out of fear, but authorities have not confirmed if she discharged her firearm.
Shortly after the bystander was hit, the gunman is seen rushing around the corner with his weapon raised, prompting the officer to flee. He fires several shots in her direction before she takes cover behind the planter, flanked by the bodies of the fallen officer and the civilian.
First Line-of-Duty Death for Montreal Police Since 2002
The attack marks the first time a Montreal police officer has been killed in the line of duty in over two decades. The incident also reflects a broader trend of increasing violence against Canadian law enforcement. Earlier in June, Ontario Provincial Police officer Tarun Bali and Toronto Police Constable Marc Pinizzotto were killed in separate operations. On the same day as the Montreal shooting, two RCMP officers were shot in Melville, Saskatchewan.
Police have not yet confirmed whether the gunman was killed by the responding officer or by an emergency tactical team that arrived on scene. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
