Environment Canada Issues Tornado Warning for Southwestern Ontario
Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning for parts of southwestern Ontario as forecasters track a severe thunderstorm moving through the region. The warning was issued just after 6 p.m. Thursday for areas including Chatham-Kent and Rondeau Park.
Storm Path and Affected Communities
According to Environment Canada, the storm was located over Moraviantown and moving east at approximately 40 km/h. Communities in its potential path include Thamesville, Ridgetown, Highgate, and Rodney.
Severe Weather Hazards
The weather agency warned that damaging winds, large hail, and locally heavy rainfall were also possible across southwestern Ontario. Environment Canada described the situation as “very dangerous and potentially life-threatening,” urging residents to immediately seek shelter in a basement, interior room, or sturdy building.
Earlier Warnings and Precautions
Earlier on Thursday afternoon, Environment Canada had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of the region, with conditions favorable for thunderstorms producing wind gusts of up to 90 km/h, toonie-sized hail, and the threat of tornadoes. People are advised to avoid spending time outdoors and to protect themselves from flying debris during severe weather events. Residents are also urged to monitor forecasts and weather warnings as the storm continues to move through the region.
