Toronto Teacher’s Suicide Three Years Ago Continues to Fuel Debate Over DEI Policies in Schools

It has been nearly three years since Richard Bilkszto, a Toronto teacher and principal, took his own life after what he described as being bullied and humiliated for standing up for Canada during a Toronto District School Board diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training session. The circumstances surrounding his death on July 13, 2023, sparked widespread outrage and forced a national conversation about the limits of ideological conformity in public education.

What Happened During the TDSB Training Session

The controversy stemmed from a DEI training session conducted by Kiki Ojo-Thompson, founder and CEO of the Kojo Institute, who was brought in by the TDSB to lead the workshop. According to an audio transcript of the April 2021 meeting, Ojo-Thompson allegedly claimed that “Canada is a bastion of white supremacy and colonialism” and that “the racism we experience is far worse here than it is there — in the United States.”

Bilkszto, drawing on his teaching experience on both sides of the border, pushed back. He stated that based on facts and figures as well as his professional experience, Canada is “a fairer society” than the United States and that it would be doing an “incredible disservice” to students if this reality were not communicated to them.

The Aftermath for Richard Bilkszto

The consequences for Bilkszto were swift and severe. Rather than engaging in a civil, fact-based exchange, the response from those leading the session was one of hostility. Bilkszto was reportedly shunned by his superiors, and his contract with the school board was not renewed. Ojo-Thompson further addressed Bilkszto’s comments in a subsequent meeting, compounding the public humiliation.

Bilkszto eventually received workers’ compensation for the stress caused by the backlash to his pro-Canada statements. However, the damage had been done. His protracted legal battle and the professional isolation he endured preceded his tragic death.

The Broader Debate Over DEI and Canadian Identity

The case has become a flashpoint in the broader debate over DEI programming in Canadian schools and public institutions. Critics argue that the ideological framework underpinning some DEI initiatives leaves no room for patriotic expression or fact-based counterpoints, creating an environment where teachers and administrators face professional retaliation for expressing positive views about Canada.

Supporters of such programming contend that honest conversations about systemic racism and colonialism are necessary and overdue. The tension between these perspectives remains unresolved in many school boards across the country.

Where Does Kiki Ojo-Thompson Stand Now?

Despite the controversy that became publicly linked to Bilkszto’s death, Ojo-Thompson’s career has continued without significant professional setback. According to her LinkedIn profile, she worked as a Human Capital Partner at Deloitte from September 2024 to January 2026 and more recently took on a role as an Executive Advisor at MJY Advisory.

This fact has not gone unnoticed by those who followed the Bilkszto case, many of whom view the lack of professional consequences as emblematic of a double standard in how accountability is applied within Canada’s institutional landscape.

A Renewed Sense of Canadian Nationalism

In the years since Bilkszto’s death, the cultural and political climate in Canada has shifted notably. Threats of annexation from former U.S. President Trump, a resurgence of Canadian national pride, and Prime Minister Mark Carney’s assertion that Canada can serve as a “beacon to the world” have all contributed to a renewed sense of patriotism across the country.

Against this backdrop, Bilkszto’s willingness to publicly defend Canada during a time when such expressions were met with hostility in educational and institutional settings has taken on added significance for many observers. His case raises enduring questions about whether affirming Canadian values should require courage — and whether those who do so deserve recognition rather than punishment.

As the debate over DEI programming, free expression, and national identity continues to evolve in Canadian public life, the story of Richard Bilkszto remains a sobering reminder of what can go wrong when ideological rigidity replaces open dialogue.
