Enforcement history and ministerial order

Despite earlier enforcement actions, Canlab continued to market peptide products on multiple websites and made numerous unproven health claims.

In December 2023, Health Canada urged consumers to avoid purchasing these peptides, citing serious health risks, and a ministerial order required the company to cease all advertising and sales of the unauthorized products.

The injunction now prohibits Canlab and its representatives from manufacturing, testing, distributing, selling, or assisting others in any of those activities.

Scope of the injunction

The order bars the company from promoting the peptides through websites or social‑media platforms that are reachable via a Canadian IP address.

Understanding Unauthorized Injectable Peptides

What they are and how they are used

Peptide medications influence body functions and are commonly marketed for bodybuilding, anti‑aging therapy, and performance enhancement in athletic activities.

Regulatory status in Canada

Injectable peptides are treated as prescription drugs in Canada and must receive Health Canada approval before they can be legally sold.

Health Risks and Consumer Guidance

Potential health effects

Taking unapproved peptides can lead to hormonal imbalance, mood swings, blood sugar disturbances, liver or kidney damage, blood clots, and even the growth of cancerous tumors.

Advice for consumers

Health Canada warned Canadians in April to think carefully before injecting peptides purchased online, noting that these products can alter bodily functions and are often promoted for anti‑aging, weight loss, bodybuilding, athletic performance, injury recovery, sleep, mental focus, and overall well‑being.

The agency emphasized that the risks are real and can affect anyone who uses these substances.

How to Verify Legitimate Peptide Products

Checking drug approval

Approved prescription medications carry an eight‑digit Drug Identification Number (DIN) on the label. Consumers can confirm a product’s status by searching Health Canada’s drug product database.
