Investigators find digital evidence linking the attack to extremist ideology

Federal prosecutors announced that a video clip discovered on a phone inside the rented minivan used in the Saturday attack was crucial to the investigation. The suspect, identified as Abdul Ballout, deliberately drove the vehicle into a crowd, killing one person and injuring dozens.

Weapon and vehicle details

After the collision, Ballout exited the van wielding a machete and continued to assault people on foot. A sheath for the machete was later found inside the vehicle, confirming the weapon’s presence. Police also reported that he confronted officers with a sharp implement before being shot.

Background of the suspect

Ballout, a 21‑year‑old German citizen of Lebanese descent, was already known to law‑enforcement and the justice system. The previous year he traveled to Lebanon, where he attempted to join ISIS and made contact with several operatives. He received a three‑month prison term for attempting to join the terrorist organization, was later repatriated to Germany, and received a suspended sentence of one year and ten months for planning an anti‑state act of violence.

Political reaction and questions about surveillance

Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed disbelief that the suspect could carry out the assault while apparently under constant monitoring. He noted the paradox that anyone can locate a mobile phone or track an iPad from anywhere, yet security agencies appear unable to determine the whereabouts of individuals classified as security threats.
