Tragic Loss of a Seven‑Year‑Old Girl

Drihanna Matamona, a seven‑year‑old girl from Calgary, drowned in a Legacy storm pond on a Sunday afternoon, her family confirmed. The incident occurred after she left home and wandered to the nearby water.

Remembering Drihanna’s Bright Spirit

Those who knew her describe Drihanna as bright, loving and full of joy. Her godmother, Ninon Ignoumba, recalled how Drihanna’s presence was instantly noticeable. “When Drihanna was here, you noticed her presence,” Ignoumba said, adding that the girl could solve puzzles faster than anyone else.

Despite being autistic and non‑verbal, Drihanna’s personality shone through. Her aunt, Gloria Massengo, explained that she always sought new friends and would reach out by holding a stranger’s hand, inviting them to play.

Family’s Grief and Immediate Needs

The loss has left both parents unable to eat, according to Ignoumba, who said the pain is still raw. “Both parents can’t eat,” she noted, “it’s hard for them to swallow because the pain is still there.” Massengo added that her sister, Drihanna’s mother, needs emotional support.

To help cover funeral costs, household bills and other immediate needs, the family has launched a GoFundMe campaign. A growing memorial by the pond reflects the community’s outpouring of support.

Community Response and Calls for Safety

Ignoumba and Massengo expressed deep gratitude for the community’s assistance, saying they no longer feel alone. They hope the City of Calgary will consider installing a fence around the pond, especially since it lies near a playground where a child can quickly drown.

“We lost Drihanna,” Ignoumba said, “we don’t want any family to go through this. If we can prevent it, it is better to prevent than to be sorry.”

The family will gather at the pond this Sunday at 5 p.m., inviting anyone in the community to join them in remembering a girl who was full of life, joy and happiness. “Our Drihanna will be with us forever,” Ignoumba added.
