Andy Serkis addresses diversity in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum
Veteran actor and director Andy Serkis, 62, who spent a quarter of a century portraying Gollum in Peter Jackson’s trilogies, says he will both star in and helm the upcoming film The Hunt for Gollum.
Rejecting “DEI boxes” and politically correct casting
In an interview with the BBC, Serkis explained that he does not feel compelled to check diversity boxes for the new movie, calling the idea of “politically correct” casting a misguided approach.
He noted that the world of the Shire has historically been portrayed as overwhelmingly white, and suggested that the filmmakers have been cautious about introducing characters from outside that setting.
Film’s storyline and production details
Serkis described the plot as sitting somewhere between The Hobbit and the original Lord of the Rings books, taking place across two different dimensions and offering a deep exploration of Gollum’s psychology before his transformation.
The script also raises a question from Gandalf about the possible origin of Bilbo Baggins’s ring, adding a layer of mystery to the narrative.
He confirmed that he will not direct the separate project titled Shadow of the Past, which was written by former Late Show host Stephen Colbert, and praised Colbert’s enthusiasm for the story.
Cast and release schedule
The new film features a lineup that includes Anya Taylor‑Joy, Kate Winslet, Jamie Dornan, Leo Woodall and Lee Pace, while Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen are set to reprise their iconic roles as Frodo, Gollum and Gandalf.
Production is being overseen by Peter Jackson, who returns as producer alongside longtime collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, with the movie slated to open in theatres on December 17 2027.
