Sam Smith Announces Engagement to Christian Cowan
Sam Smith has confirmed his engagement to fashion designer Christian Cowan, his long‑time partner, after more than three years together.
The “Stay With Me” singer shared the news in an interview with The New York Times, saying the couple are now officially fiancés.
Timing Before the New Album
The announcement arrives less than a month before Smith’s fifth studio album, Hazel Eyes, is set for release on August 21.
Smith explained that the album’s title honors Cowan’s eye color, linking the music directly to the personal milestone.
Creative Inspiration on the New Album
According to Smith, the first track of the upcoming album was begun the night before their first date and finished while the relationship continued to develop.
The song, titled “Eternal Love,” marks the first time the 34‑year‑old has written about reciprocated love, a theme he describes as deeply personal.
“It really feels like I’ve been waiting a lifetime to sing a song like this,” Smith said, highlighting the emotional weight of the composition.
Queer Identity and Radical Love Songs
Smith also emphasized that, as a queer artist, creating love songs is a radical act in today’s world.
He told The New York Times that he will not let the “poison” he reads and sees affect the way he loves, underscoring a commitment to authenticity.
Fashion Collaboration at the Met Gala
Smith and Cowan attended the Met Gala together earlier this year, with the singer wearing an outfit designed by his partner.
Cowan posted on Instagram a note celebrating the look, describing it as a love letter to fashion illustration legend Erté and to Smith, noting the opulent use of 255,000 crystals and beads, and 2,000 hours of hand sewing.
“I have always loved Erté. I love the way he brought costume art to the world through his visionary illustrations. The infamous opulence and craftsmanship of the 1920s. 255,000 individual crystals and beads. 2,000 hours of artisan hand sewing. This look is a love letter to the king of fashion illustration and to my love, Sam,” Cowan wrote.
Red‑Carpet Moment and Symbolic Rose
The couple’s first red‑carpet appearance was at the Met Gala in May 2024, where both wore roses dipped in 24‑karat gold and sterling silver attached to their ensembles.
Cowan recalled that he gave Sam a metal‑plated rose early on, a nod that resurfaced during the gala’s glamorous moment.
