Poilievre names Edmonton MP Dane Lloyd to lead federalist campaign in Alberta

Letter confirms role and outlines responsibilities

Prime Minister Pierre Poilievre confirmed in a written letter that Parkland MP Dane Lloyd will serve as the Conservative Party’s point person for a national campaign urging Albertans to remain in Canada, should a referendum be held.

Who is Dane Lloyd?

Dane Lloyd, 35, currently heads the Conservative Party in Alberta and was recently appointed national security adviser to the leader. He previously served as the party’s emergency preparedness critic and was first elected in a 2017 by‑election after the resignation of interim leader Rona Ambrose. Before entering politics he spent a decade as a captain in the Canadian Armed Forces Primary Reserve.

The campaign message

The letter asks Lloyd to listen to Albertans’ legitimate concerns, avoid scolding, and argue that a better deal is possible within Confederation. He is instructed to highlight that a Conservative government would repeal the Liberal resource and gun‑control measures and promote policies such as more pipelines, additional housing, lower taxes, safer roads, stronger borders and greater personal freedom, claiming these benefits would help workers and families across the country.

Political context in Alberta

Lloyd sits among 33 Conservative MPs from Alberta, a province where the party controls all but four seats. While many caucus members have voiced support for national unity, some rural members remain hesitant, reflecting persistent separatist sentiments in parts of the province.

Referendum details

The proposed Alberta referendum is scheduled for October 19, giving voters the choice to stay in Canada or trigger the constitutional process for an independence vote.

  • Poilievre promises to speak to “Albertanians on both sides of this referendum.”
  • Poilievre says he will fight for Canadian unity “across Alberta.”
