Canada scuttles cross-border celebrations of Gordie Howe Bridge opening after new tariffs

Canada skips U.S. celebration for Gordie Howe Bridge opening

Ottawa announced that it will not join any cross‑border festivities next week to mark the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, citing recent trade actions by the United States.

Reason for the snub

Communications director Jenna Ghassabeh said the planned celebration would be inappropriate given the tariff threats issued by the U.S. earlier in the week.

Bridge set to open July 27

The new crossing is scheduled to welcome vehicle traffic on Monday, July 27, 2026.

Planned domestic celebration

While the official cross‑border event is cancelled, Canadians will hold a separate dedication ceremony in Windsor on Friday, July 24, aimed at key supporters of the project.

Construction and financing background

Construction began in 2018 to relieve congestion on the privately owned Ambassador Bridge. The federal government financed the project at a cost of $6.4 billion and secured an agreement with Michigan that allowed Canada to collect all toll revenue until it recouped its investment.

Previous ceremony cancellation

In February, President Donald Trump expressed disagreement with the original terms and halted a ceremony that had been planned for June.

Unclear new agreement and calls for transparency

After closed‑door negotiations, a revised agreement was announced earlier this month allowing the July 27 opening, but the specifics remain undisclosed. Opposition parties have demanded that the full text of the new deal be made public.
