Prime Minister Mark Carney Calls for a Unified Canada to Double Electric Grid Capacity by 2050

Revisiting Energy Policy and the Clean Electricity Regulations

At the first ministerial meeting in Charlottetown, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his government is ready to amend the Clean Electricity Regulations, a move he says will help ensure both reliability and affordability of electricity in the short term while advancing a clean energy transition.

Doubling the Grid: Goals and Timeline

Carney outlined an ambitious target: double Canada’s electric grid capacity by 2050 to support a growing economy. He described the current grid as operating at “historic levels” and said the expansion will require new generation, transmission, distribution, storage and modernized infrastructure.

Four Pillars for a Nationwide Power Expansion

The plan rests on four pillars: building the capacity to double electricity generation; creating a national grid that links provincial systems from east to west and north; assembling a skilled workforce; and using Canadian technology, labour and materials.

Provincial Collaboration and Infrastructure Projects

Carney urged premiers to unite behind the goal. He highlighted an expanded transmission line between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick and a federally backed agreement among the premiers of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia to jointly design and operate their electric systems. In addition, Ottawa pledged support for British Columbia’s North Coast Transmission Line, with plans to extend it into the Yukon and Alberta.

Trade Liberalisation and International Context

The Prime Minister also praised premiers for reducing interprovincial trade barriers, noting recent moves that will allow breweries, distilleries and wineries to sell across the country early next year. He criticised the United States’ new tariffs on Canada, pledging that the government will defend families, workers and businesses.

Looking Ahead

With a clear vision of a stronger, more connected national grid, Carney says Canada can become an energy superpower, balancing affordable baseload power from natural gas with a long‑term clean‑energy transition.
