His 61‑year‑old daughter, Melanie Shatner, received a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer in July 2022. The HER2‑positive tumor had spread to the lymph nodes in her breast.

Treatment Paths

Shatner underwent surgery to remove the facial tumor and completed a two‑year course of immunotherapy.

Melanie received multiple rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and 30 sessions of radiation therapy.

Outcome

Both Shatner and his daughter were declared cancer‑free at the end of 2024, according to their statements.

Health Insights and Reflections

Personal Reflections

Shatner recalled being told that delayed diagnosis could have been fatal, saying, “I think the universe takes care of me.” He now feels healthier than he has in years, noting that “the brain is like a muscle” and benefits from activity.

Melanie described the emotional toll of radiation, calling it “emotionally demanding,” while chemotherapy was the most physically taxing part of her treatment.

Broader Perspective

The experience shifted both of their outlooks on life. Shatner said he now appreciates “the miracle of a hummingbird, my dog playing a ball, and my children,” emphasizing gratitude for everyday moments.

Supporting Information

Medical Background

The Canadian Dermatology Association explains that malignant melanoma arises in pigment‑producing melanocytes and, when caught early, has one of the highest cure rates among cancers.

Women’s College Hospital notes that stage 4 breast cancer occurs when cancer cells break away from the primary tumor and spread via bloodstream or lymphatic system to distant organs such as bone, lung, brain or liver.

Canadian Cancer Statistics

A 2025 report from the Canadian Cancer Society indicates that roughly two in five Canadians will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, and about one in four will die from the disease. The most commonly diagnosed cancers are lung, breast, prostate and colon.

New Wellness Venture

“No Time But Now” Podcast

The father‑daughter duo launched a wellness podcast titled “No Time But Now,” with its inaugural episode released on July 29.
