British Columbia Wildfires Stretch Across Province, Triggering Evacuations
Residents throughout British Columbia are confronting the rapid spread of wildfires that threaten homes and communities. The BC Wildfire Service reports roughly 120 active fires, and a cold front is expected to bring stronger winds that could hamper containment efforts.
Clinton Under Evacuation Order After Pear Lake Fire
In Clinton, located about 350 km northeast of Vancouver, an evacuation order remains in place following the advance of the Pear Lake wildfire on Friday. Bruce Kirkby, a local resident, described the frantic effort to gather his four cats before leaving, noting that the animals slipped from his grasp and that he was forced to abandon some of them.
Unprecedented Traffic and Community Response
Kirkby said the volume of traffic exiting Clinton was unlike anything he had ever seen, with many vehicles on the road. The Village of Clinton announced that firefighters worked through the night to protect the community, and officials have thanked the Clinton Fire Department, BC Wildfire Service, and other emergency responders for their dedication.
Uncertain Damage Assessment
While some structures have been lost, the full extent of the damage has not yet been determined because it is still too dangerous to assess the affected properties. The damage appears concentrated in the industrial area south of the village. Brian Doddridge of the emergency operations centre noted that most neighbourhoods survived the fire, but the situation remains active.
Broader Impacts in Boston Bar and Surrounding Areas
About 100 miles south of Clinton, the Boston Bar region faces its own wildfire challenge. Police are investigating after the Fraser Valley Regional District reported that the local water system was allegedly destroyed while an evacuation order was in effect. Patricia Ross, chair of the district, said the water system was shut off to store water for firefighters and later reopened by an unknown individual, potentially damaging critical infrastructure.
Health and Infrastructure Concerns
Joanne Mitchell, who lives in a senior housing complex in Clinton, said residents have endured weeks of smoke, ash, and poor air quality since early July. She argues that vulnerable populations, including the elderly, should have been evacuated sooner. Power remains off in the village, with BC Hydro indicating that restoration will begin once conditions are safe, and road access is currently closed as RCMP and security personnel keep the area clear for firefighting operations.
