Unexpected Python Turns Up in Mississauga Car Engine
A Mississauga resident discovered a live python coiled in the engine compartment of her vehicle earlier this month, prompting a swift response from local animal services.
Rescue Operation by Animal Services
The resident called a mechanic about the surprising find, and Mississauga Animal Services arrived shortly thereafter.
“An officer reached into the engine,” the city explained in a Facebook post. “To everyone’s surprise, the python calmly climbed right onto her arm to rescue her safely.”
The snake was visibly dehydrated and sustained a few minor scratches, but it is now recovering at the Mississauga Animal Shelter under appropriate care.
Ball Python Background
According to the Toronto Zoo, the snake is a ball python, a species native to regions of West and Central Africa and also known simply as a ball python.
These snakes can live up to 30 years and reach lengths between one and 1.5 meters as adults, with some individuals growing as long as 1.83 meters.
Ball pythons are popular in the pet trade because of their docile temperament and manageable size, making them a common “starter pet” for reptile enthusiasts.
Care and Recovery
The city reported that the python is receiving the necessary treatment and monitoring at the shelter.
“Calls like this show how ready our officers are to handle everything from pets to exotic animals to keep our community safe,” the city said.
Owner Not Identified
The municipality has not disclosed whether Animal Services or the shelter have located the snake’s owner.
