Coffee and Heart Health: What the Latest Research Says

A recent American Heart Association study, published in July, suggests that drinking moderate amounts of coffee each day may help lower the risk of several heart‑related conditions, including heart failure, coronary artery disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Key Findings from the AHA Study

The study found that up to 400 mg of caffeine per day — roughly the amount in five standard cups of caffeinated coffee without added sugar or fillers — is considered safe for most adults and is not linked to higher cardiovascular risk.

Both Coffee Types Offer Benefits

Researchers noted that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee were associated with reduced risk, indicating that other bioactive compounds such as polyphenols may play a protective role.

Filtered vs. Unfiltered Coffee

Filtered coffee does not raise LDL cholesterol, while unfiltered brewing methods preserve cafestol, a natural oily compound that can increase blood cholesterol levels.

Who Should Watch Their Caffeine Intake

Age, genetics and individual metabolic rate influence how people respond to caffeine, meaning the “safe” amount can differ from person to person. Younger adults who consume high‑dose caffeine from energy drinks or shots may experience elevated blood pressure and irregular heart rhythms, so the study advises avoiding those sources.

Expert Perspective

Dr. Gregory M. Marcus, a professor of medicine and associate director of cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco, says coffee is a staple for millions and, when consumed within recommended limits, does not increase heart disease risk.
