Shifting Preferences in Porcelain and Stone Surfaces

From Glossy Neutrals to Warm, Textured Finishes

Ali Abdali, chief executive of Toronto‑based Marbella, notes that the industry has moved away from the long‑standing dominance of cool, shiny gray and white tones with high‑gloss finishes. Homeowners and designers are now gravitating toward warmer hues and surfaces that are matte or satin, which give spaces a more subdued and inviting feel.

The Resurgence of Travertine

Travertine, a natural stone that enjoyed widespread popularity a decade ago, largely vanished from the market for several years before making a comeback in recent designs. Its return signals a renewed appreciation for classic, textured materials that add depth and character to interiors.

Design Guidance: Long‑Term vs. Short‑Term Trends

Abdali advises clients to consider how long they intend to keep a surface before making a decision. He suggests asking whether the chosen material is something you want to look at every day for the next ten years, or if it is a fleeting trend that may lose appeal within two or three years. When a bold, bright, or highly reflective look is desired, he cautions to evaluate the amount of time one will actually spend maintaining or living with that aesthetic.
