Backyards Evolving Into Multifunctional, Eco-Friendly Living Spaces

Backyards are no longer just patches of grass behind the house. Today, homeowners across Ontario are transforming their outdoor spaces into multifunctional, eco-friendly extensions of their indoor living areas — places designed for entertaining, relaxation, wellness, and year-round enjoyment.

“Homeowners want practical spaces built for true Ontario weather — comfortable seating and dining areas, fire pits or fireplaces for shoulder seasons, and good indoor-outdoor flow,” says Adrian Bartels, president of Cedar Springs Landscaping in Oakville.

Fire Features Anchor the Modern Backyard

According to Greg Hogan of Hogan Landscaping in Stouffville, sunken patios with fire pits or fire tables remain among the most sought-after additions to a backyard setting. “They’re great for all ages, giving the room a very warm, intimate feel and extending the enjoyment of the backyard well into the evening,” he says.

An inside-outside connection is also highly desirable. A covered patio, perhaps with a fireplace or heater, provides outdoor heating that extends the use of your outdoor space into late fall, winter, and early spring.

Landscape lighting, once considered optional, is now included in most landscape projects for both the front and back yards. “It provides safe passage along walkways and steps and highlights various features of the landscaping,” Hogan adds.

Pergolas, Privacy, and Low-Maintenance Design

Slatted pergolas are another trend gaining momentum. “These are very popular because they help with municipal property coverage restrictions while also providing rain and insect protection,” says Bartels. Privacy is also a key concern, especially in small urban gardens. “Customers are demanding smart privacy solutions with columnar trees such as Slender Silhouette Amber, Hornbeam and Pyramid Beech. Overall, low-maintenance designs remain a top priority.”

Landscape Styles: Modern Geometry Meets Natural Flow

When it comes to landscape styles, Hogan notes that owners of new properties tend to favor a modern, geometric style, while those with older properties and established trees often opt for a natural, free-flowing aesthetic.

More homeowners are also expressing interest in attracting birds and butterflies. Planting trees like serviceberry, shrubs like arctic firebox dogwood, and perennials like milkweed can help achieve that goal.

Hogan is also seeing increasing demand for wellness havens — quiet areas in a garden dedicated to reading, meditation, and other calming activities — as well as drought-tolerant, naturalized plantings and dedicated spaces for vegetable gardens.

Materials: Natural Stone, Hardwood, and Composite Options

Natural stone slabs and high-quality hardwoods like Ipe or Thermory are the top material choices for those whose budget allows, Bartels reports. Large-format concrete pavers and easy-care composite materials are also very popular.

Meanwhile, some trends are falling out of favor. Pressure-treated decking, overly manicured lawns, highly minimalist hardscaping, colored or dyed mulch, plastic edging, and strict formal symmetry are all considered past their prime.

Pool Trends: Integrated, Geometric, and Energy-Efficient

Pools are now being designed as an integrated part of the entire garden rather than as a stand-alone feature. “Homeowners like geometric shapes, darker, reflective interiors, natural stone accents, tanning ledges, beach access, built-in spas, waterfalls, fire pits, and LED lighting,” Bartels says.

Energy-efficient appliances and well-placed surrounding plantings provide privacy and wind protection, helping homeowners make the most of Ontario’s shorter swimming season.

Hot tubs are also growing in popularity, either as a complement to a pool or as an alternative when space is limited. “If there is a height difference from the front door to the ground, incorporating a hot tub into a patio is very popular, especially if it is located close to the house for winter use,” Hogan says. “Sometimes there is also a cold immersion bath.”

Key Considerations Before Starting a Landscaping Project

“A knowledgeable, experienced landscaping company with a strong track record will help you navigate site challenges, regulations, and design decisions so your project is a success the first time,” Bartels advises.

Important factors that landscaping professionals help homeowners address include:

  • Location and climate realities: Hardiness zones, heavy clay soil, drainage, sun and shade, wind exposure, and freeze-thaw cycles all play a role. A good grade is essential.
  • Lifestyle and four-season use: Planning how to use the space from spring through fall, plus considering winter views and snow removal.
  • Plant selection: Choosing the right native and hardy species that require less maintenance.
  • Budget: Balancing upfront costs with long-term maintenance expenses.
  • Regulations: Local ordinances, permits, property boundaries, and conservation authority requirements.

With thoughtful planning and the right design partners, today’s backyards are becoming true outdoor living spaces — built to handle Ontario’s unique climate while reflecting the personal style and lifestyle needs of the families who use them.
