Most Canadians continue to hold a negative view of the United States, reflecting a broader global decline in trust in the U.S. under President Donald Trump, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.
The poll found that only 33 percent of Canadians view the United States favorably—down from 34 percent in 2025 and a sharp drop from 54 percent in 2024. Only 35 percent of Canadians now consider the U.S. a reliable partner, compared to 83 percent in 2022.
Trump has significantly strained Canada-U.S. relations through tariffs and repeated threats of annexation. The Pew survey, conducted by the nonpartisan Washington-based think tank, gathered responses from 42,151 adults across 36 countries (excluding the U.S.) via telephone, online, and in-person interviews between February 8 and May 13.
The findings align with a wider international trend: Trump received overwhelmingly negative ratings in nearly all countries surveyed, signaling a continued erosion of global confidence in U.S. leadership.
