Former politician Ann Widdecombe killed in ‘targeted attack’: British police

Former Politician Ann Widdecombe Killed in Targeted Attack

Former politician and reality TV contestant Ann Widdecombe, 78, died after a “targeted attack,” according to Britain’s anti‑terrorism police. The motive remains under investigation.

Police Investigation and Arrest

A 28‑year‑old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and terror offences and remains in custody under an extended warrant that allows police to question him for up to an additional week.

Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, said the incident “was a targeted attack” and that investigators are still determining the extent of planning, preparation and the attacker’s motivation.

Devon and Cornwall Police initially said the case was not terrorism‑related, a claim that drew criticism after new evidence prompted a transfer of the investigation to anti‑terrorism officers.

Police believe the attack occurred just after midday on Wednesday. About an hour later Widdecombe failed to appear for a scheduled television interview and was found dead the following day at her remote rural home in a village in southwest England.

The cause of death has not been disclosed, though authorities said she suffered “serious injuries.” Taylor described it as a “brutal attack on a 78‑year‑old woman in her own home.”

The suspect was arrested in South Yorkshire, more than 200 miles from Haytor, the village where Widdecombe was killed. Extensive searches of his home uncovered evidence of planning, though details were not released.

The man has not been named, as no charges have yet been filed.

Background on Ann Widdecombe

Widdecombe served as a Member of Parliament from 1987 to 2010 and held several ministerial roles, including prisons minister in Prime Minister John Major’s Conservative government during the 1990s.

She became widely known after leaving Parliament to compete on reality shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.

Later she joined the Brexit Party, served briefly as a Member of the European Parliament, and most recently aligned with the anti‑immigration Reform UK party, appearing frequently as a media spokesperson.

Political and Security Context

The killing has renewed concerns about the safety of politicians, a worry that has grown since the murders of two sitting MPs in the past decade.

Labor MP Jo Cox was shot and stabbed by a right‑wing extremist in 2016, and Conservative MP David Amess was stabbed by an attacker inspired by the Islamic State group in 2021.
