Joe Manganiello Opps Up About Nearly Decade-Long Battle With Undiagnosed Illness
Actor Joe Manganiello, best known for his role in Magic Mike, has publicly shared his harrowing experience battling an undiagnosed illness for nearly a decade, revealing that he suffered in silence for years while searching for answers.
The 49-year-old actor disclosed that even the “best doctors in the world” were unable to officially diagnose his condition. Attempts to treat it with powerful biological medications only worsened his symptoms and triggered a cascade of brutal side effects that plagued him for years, he said.
Chronic Pain and Life-Saving Surgery
Manganiello endured excruciating bouts of chronic pain and was heavily medicated for many months during his illness. His condition ultimately required him to undergo a life-saving organ amputation, a severe procedure that left him weak and, at times, unable to stand or walk.
Living with chronic pain, an existential crisis, and an ongoing fight for survival, Manganiello said doctors were left with few answers and no clear explanation for his deteriorating health.
A Global Search for Answers
Determined to understand that what was happening to him was “not random,” Manganiello opened himself up to radical and unorthodox approaches that went beyond the boundaries of Western medicine. His search for answers took him across the globe and back through time, incorporating shamans, pagan rituals, ancient myths, and long-lost family records as he sought relief.
As he delved deeper into his family history, Manganiello discovered that his ancestors — including those who survived the Armenian Genocide — also suffered from chronic illnesses, suggesting a hereditary component to his condition.
New Memoir Chronicles the Journey
Manganiello chronicles his decade-long ordeal in his upcoming memoir, Bloodlines, set for release on October 13. The book documents his journey from death’s door and his quest to understand why he suffered, while also exploring his family’s multigenerational history of chronic disease.
The actor, who was married to actress Sofia Vergara from 2015 to 2024, emphasized that his story is one of survival and hope. “When you’re out there suffering, there is hope,” he told viewers who may be going through something similar.
Manganiello’s full account of his health battle, including the years during which it took place, is expected to be detailed further in Bloodlines.
