A Toronto Man Charged in Alleged Hate-Fueled Attack on Muslim Woman
A 36-year-old man from Toronto has been charged with assault following an alleged hate-motivated attack on a Muslim woman on a public bus earlier this year.
According to Toronto police, the incident occurred on April 13, 2026. A man approached a woman aboard a Durham Region Transit bus traveling along Progress-Milner Aves. in Scarborough, north of Highway 401. During the encounter, the suspect allegedly made derogatory and anti-Muslim comments directed at the victim.
Assault Followed Anti-Muslim Remarks
After making the offensive remarks, the man physically assaulted the woman, causing her to sustain minor injuries. The victim, who did not know her attacker, was on the bus at the time. The suspect disembarked before police arrived.
Video Evidence Released
The incident was captured on video by a passenger and later shared by the National Council of Canadian Muslims. The footage shows the confrontation taking place on the bus around 3:30 p.m. on April 13. In the video, a man can be seen yelling at the woman before walking toward her, seemingly stomping on her feet while she records the incident.
“What the hell are you looking at me for?” the suspect is heard shouting. A woman recording responds, “What the hell is wrong with you? You don’t want to hit girls because we’re Muslims? F–you, go to hell.”
The video has since circulated widely, drawing attention to the rise of hate-motivated violence targeting religious minorities in Canada.
Charges Laid
Toronto police have identified and charged the 36-year-old suspect with assault. The case is being treated as a hate-motivated crime, with authorities emphasizing the importance of prosecuting violence rooted in religious discrimination.
The Durham Region Transit Authority has also reviewed the incident, confirming the bus route and time of the attack. No further suspects are being sought.
