Deadly Train Collision Near Bedford Leaves One Dead, Dozens Injured
One person was killed and dozens of others were injured when two passenger trains collided south of Bedford, approximately 60 miles north of London, British Transport Police confirmed on Friday.
Details of the Accident
The collision occurred at around 5:15 p.m. local time (16:15 GMT) on the railway line south of Bedford. Two East Midlands Railway trains were involved in the incident. A video posted on social media by a passenger showed the front of one train appearing to become entangled with the rear of another, though the carriages remained upright on the tracks.
Casualties and Injuries
One person died at the scene of the accident. According to authorities, 11 people suffered serious injuries, 22 were seriously injured, and 56 sustained minor injuries. The East of England Ambulance Service deployed a large number of emergency crews, including more than 20 ambulances and six rescue aircraft, to respond to the scene.
Eyewitness Account
Dr. Peter Knapp, who said on the social media platform Bluesky that he was aboard one of the trains, described a “sudden accident” in which a carriage slipped off the tracks. He reported suffering minor injuries in the collision.
Response from Officials
British Transport Police Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy confirmed that a major rescue operation was underway as authorities worked to determine the cause of the collision. Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a statement saying, “My thoughts are with the family of the person who sadly lost his life and with those who were seriously injured.”
