A high school in Nova Scotia has issued a recall of its newly distributed yearbooks after discovering a quote that minimizes the scale of the Holocaust. The quote, which reads “6 million? No, 271,000,” directly challenges the widely accepted historical figure of six million Jewish victims murdered by the Nazi regime during World War II.
Community Response and Historical Context
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from community members and advocacy groups. Neli Shpoker, a parent with family ties to Holocaust survivors, expressed both pain and frustration at the oversight. She attributed the problem to a lack of comprehensive Holocaust education in the school curriculum, suggesting that students may not fully grasp the significance of such harmful references encountered online.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has classified the “271k” figure as a recognized hate symbol. According to the organization, this number originates from an incomplete archival document that accounted for deaths in only a limited number of camps, ignoring the vast number of victims who perished in ghettos, mass shootings, and other extermination sites across Eastern Europe.
Legal and Educational Implications
Holocaust denial and trivialization are criminal offenses under the Canadian Criminal Code. The issue gained national attention last October when a man in North Bay, Ontario, became the first person convicted in a Canadian court for Holocaust denial, receiving a sentence of nine months in prison and two years of probation.
Shpoker praised the school administration for its swift action in recalling the yearbooks but emphasized that reactive measures are not enough. She and the Atlantic Jewish Council (AJC) are calling for mandatory Holocaust education in Nova Scotia schools to prevent such incidents and combat rising anti-Semitism. The AJC noted that since October 7, it has become increasingly difficult to bring these critical educational gaps to the attention of provincial leaders.

The quote sparked debate on social media, with some community members arguing that providing a different number does not constitute denial. However, historians and watchdog groups maintain that the “271,000” figure is a deliberate attempt to diminish the magnitude of the genocide.
