Committee to Examine Bridge Revenue‑Sharing Deal

Special Session at Gordie Howe International Bridge

A House of Commons committee will hold a special meeting at the Gordie Howe International Bridge on the day of its opening, as the Liberal government faces scrutiny over its revenue‑sharing arrangement with the United States.

The session is expected to be largely administrative, with MPs reviewing the scope of the upcoming study and preparing a list of witnesses to be called.

Proposed Toll Revenue Split

The agreement, announced in principle, would see Canada share half of the net toll revenue generated by the bridge with the United States for a period of 15 years.

The bridge, which opened to motorists on Monday, is the focus of the discussion.

Prime Minister’s Position

Prime Minister Mark Carney has previously stated that tolls would not be transferred to the United States until Canada repays the debt incurred to construct the bridge.

Speaking in Charlottetown, Carney acknowledged that his recent explanations of the deal may not have been as clear as they should have been.

Opposition Response

Conservative MP Kelly McCauley announced on social media that she would request a committee meeting to “get to the bottom of the matter,” highlighting concerns about the transparency of the agreement.
