Federal and Alberta Governments Launch Major Housing Infrastructure Deal
Funding Commitment and Timeline
The two governments have signed an agreement that will provide more than $510 million in federal funding to Alberta municipalities over eight years.
Alberta will contribute at least one‑third of each project’s eligible costs, with a provincial cap of up to $428 million.
Focus on Water and Wastewater Infrastructure
The partnership prioritizes upgrades to water and wastewater systems, which are essential for supporting new home construction and expanding communities.
A new sewer pipeline in Airdrie, located outside Calgary, is projected to enable the building of approximately 45,000 additional homes.
Addressing Long‑Term Housing Shortages
Premier Danielle Smith said rapid population growth has strained public services and infrastructure throughout Alberta.
“It highlighted the acute need to build more and build faster,” she stated at the Red Deer news conference.
Mark Carney, speaking on behalf of the federal government, noted that Canada has fallen short on housing construction for decades, resulting in many households spending more than half of their income on accommodation.
“A house needs more than four walls, a roof, stone glazing and a stone slab. It also needs clean drinking water and a reliable sewage system,” he added.
Provincial Leadership in Project Prioritization
Alberta will continue to lead the identification and prioritization of projects through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, ensuring that regional needs drive funding decisions.
This collaborative approach is intended to accelerate construction while maintaining financial sustainability for each development.
