Blue skies and sunshine returned to Kelowna’s waterfront on Wednesday, allowing tourists to once again enjoy the city’s beaches and outdoor attractions.

Tourism concerns after recent wildfire smoke

Just days earlier, wildfire smoke had blanketed the Central Okanagan, creating some of the worst air‑quality conditions in the world and raising concerns about the region’s reputation.

Local businesses that depend on tourism, such as parasailing operator Luke Weller, reported that smoky days diminish the visitor experience and can reduce revenue.

“A lot of people come for the views and photos, and when it’s smoky you don’t get the full experience,” Weller said, noting the impact on his business.

Health warnings and visitor behaviour

Health officials advise people with asthma, heart disease or other underlying conditions to stay indoors when air quality deteriorates, and note that even healthy individuals may experience eye irritation, coughing, headaches or fatigue after prolonged exposure.

Tourism Kelowna’s president and CEO, Cassandra Zerebeski, said that one or two smoky days can give visitors the wrong impression of the region, potentially leading to reputational damage and changes or cancellations of travel plans.

Tourism industry response and outlook

Despite the recent smoke, officials point out that much of this summer has been relatively smoke‑free, and a wide range of indoor attractions—including wineries, restaurants, art galleries and other venues—remain available for visitors.

Destination BC and other tourism organisations are collaborating to improve communication about wildfire smoke, ensuring that visitors have accurate, up‑to‑date information when planning their trips.

“Communication is key,” Zerebeski emphasized, adding that modern travellers can verify current conditions themselves, which helps counter outdated or irrelevant news stories.

Tourism leaders hope that clear information will prevent occasional smoky days from overshadowing the region’s overall appeal, keeping the Okanagan’s blue‑sky image strong for the future.
