Parents Struggle to Secure Daycare Amid License Rejections

Finding a daycare spot close to home in the city has become a growing challenge for many families. The difficulty is compounded when applications to open new childcare facilities are turned down, leaving parents with limited options.

A Family’s Experience

Kinza Nissar, who has worked in childcare for more than a year, applied for a license in January with her mother to reopen a licensed daycare that had been closed for six months. Despite their investment of time, money, and effort, the application was denied. Nissar described feeling angry and sad, noting that they had to inform families already enrolled that the centre would have to shut down.

The province issued a letter stating that no new licenses would be approved in the area, indicating a pause on expanding the system in that community.

Government Response and Policy Shifts

Officials explain that the pause on new licenses is intended to assess community needs and to focus on stabilizing the existing childcare system rather than pursuing rapid expansion. The Ministry of Education says it is close to reaching its target of 28,000 childcare places as of May 31.

According to the Ministry, applications are not being rejected outright; they are being placed on hold to evaluate the specific needs of each community before granting approval.

Opposition Criticism

Matt Love, the opposition education critic, says frustration is widespread among parents and childcare providers across the province. He emphasizes that caring for families in need is hard work that does not lead to wealth, yet the government’s response feels like a dismissal of that effort.

Progress Toward Childcare Goals

Despite the current setbacks, the Ministry reports that it is nearing its goal of providing 28,000 childcare spaces. The focus remains on ensuring that existing services are sustainable and that new openings are strategically placed to meet community demand, especially in rural areas.
