Born in Dublin in February 1945, she originally aspired to journalism and worked as an assistant arts editor at The Irish Times, where her father was employed.
At 19 she secured an uncredited role in the 1964 film Of Human Bondage, launching a career that spanned decades and made her one of Ireland’s most respected actresses.
