Canada’s Carney Hails U.S.-Brokered Iran Peace Deal as a “Game Changer” for Global Diplomacy

During the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed strong optimism about a newly brokered peace agreement between the United States and Iran, calling it a potential turning point not only for Middle Eastern stability but also for resolving the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Carney Praises the Iran Agreement

In an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Carney stated, “I have to say, it exceeded my expectations,” adding that Canada is “very satisfied with the deal that has come about.” Although the full text of the agreement remains undisclosed, key provisions include a temporary ceasefire and the immediate lifting of the naval blockade in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The deal also establishes a 60-day window for negotiations between Iran and the U.S. on critical issues such as sanctions relief and Iran’s nuclear program—including the fate of its enriched uranium stockpile. Carney highlighted that the agreement includes “performance-based” measures tied to developments in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding regions, which he referred to as the “Oil River.”

G7 and Gulf Leaders Discuss Implementation

At the summit, G7 leaders convened with heads of state from several Gulf nations to discuss next steps in implementing the Iran accord. Carney emphasized that while Canada may have limited naval capacity to contribute directly to security in the strait, it can play a meaningful role in supporting sanctions enforcement and facilitating the release of frozen assets as part of the diplomatic process.

Implications for the Ukraine Conflict

Carney noted that the Iran deal offers a fresh perspective on conflict resolution, potentially informing approaches to ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. In a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the summit, Carney expressed confidence that Ukraine would ultimately prevail and announced new sanctions targeting Russia.

As global leaders continue to assess the ripple effects of the U.S.-Iran agreement, Carney’s remarks underscore a growing belief that diplomatic breakthroughs in one region can catalyze progress in others—offering renewed hope for peace on multiple fronts.
