Conservative Party Faces Fundraising Challenges as Poilievre Battles Internal Rifts

With poll numbers slipping and public infighting becoming more visible, members of the Conservative Party are growing uneasy about their ability to raise money effectively. The traditionally strong fundraising record that has long set the Tories apart from the Liberal Party is now under scrutiny as the second‑quarter results loom.

Fundraising Performance Under Scrutiny

Global News has gathered data filed with Elections Canada that shows Pierre Poilievre personally attended only seven fundraising events during the first half of 2026, a sharp drop from the 27 events he participated in during the same period in 2024 when the party enjoyed higher poll standings. The decline has raised questions about the party’s outreach and donor engagement.

Despite the drop in high‑profile appearances, the Conservatives announced they raised $9.4 million from 40,410 individual contributors in the first quarter of 2026, marking the second‑best non‑election quarter in the party’s history.

Party Insiders Express Concern and Cautious Optimism

A longtime Conservative insider told Global News that the campaign team is worried about the fundraising trend, fearing that a poor showing would damage Poilievre’s image and hinder the party’s ability to finance its operations. The source emphasized that the concerns are driven by the need for cash and the risk of a negative perception.

In contrast, a senior source close to Poilievre downplayed the worries, predicting a “strong” result when the full figures are released later this month. The source noted that fundraising will be more challenging while the Liberals hold a majority and a snap election seems unlikely, but remained confident in the party’s capacity to deliver.

Internal Dissent and Calls for Leadership Change

Critics within the Conservative movement have voiced a desire to see Poilievre step down, either voluntarily or through pressure from the caucus, echoing the way former leader Erin O’Toole was ousted. However, Poilievre has repeatedly pledged to stay in the fight, and a sizable bloc of Members of Parliament continues to back him.

Commentary on the Right and Poilievre’s Position

Conservative commentator Anthony Koch, who worked on Poilievre’s leadership campaign, wrote in the National Post that a subset of right‑leaning activists appears offended by the idea of appealing to a broad electorate. He argued that these commentators mock persuasive tactics, professionalism, and anyone who accurately describes the party’s current standing as not sufficiently conservative.

Poilievre himself attracted criticism for suggesting that long‑time party loyalists were not conservative enough. His recent remarks in Calgary, where he congratulated Kerry‑Lynn Findlay on defeating “liberal lobbyists from the East,” were widely seen as a jab at Kory Teneycke, a strategic adviser for Ontario Premier Doug Ford who has publicly criticized Poilievre’s approach. Teneycke responded on a podcast, calling for a “health check” on Poilievre and questioning the logic of picking fights with fellow conservatives.
