Conservative Shadow Minister Urges Emergency Trade Talks
Letter to Prime Minister Carney
Shuv Majumdar, the Conservative shadow minister for Canada‑US relations, has sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney urging an emergency session of the Standing Committee on International Trade next week.
In the correspondence, Majumdar stresses that the Conservatives want Ottawa to present its written negotiating plan for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump during those hearings.
Tariff Threat from the United States
President Trump announced on Monday that the United States would impose a 50 percent tariff on a range of Canadian products, with the measure set to take effect within 30 days.
American officials said the proposed duties are a response to provincial alcohol bans in the United States, Canada’s supply‑driven milk system, and quotas that limit American automobile imports.
Political Context
Majumdar noted that Carney had pledged during the election campaign to maintain a friendly relationship with the American president, but he argues that the prime minister has since acquiesced to many of Trump’s demands.
The shadow minister contends that the federal government must clarify how it intends to manage the tariff threat and protect Canadian industries.
