Hamilton Officer Finds Receipt That Leads to Arrest
Police in Hamilton, Ontario, say a routine traffic stop turned into a swift theft investigation after an officer discovered a McDonald’s receipt inside an abandoned vehicle.
How the Receipt Was Discovered
Officer Matteo Ramundo arrived at the scene around 7:50 a.m. to find a black Ford Explorer with its hazard lights flashing, parked on a major roadway.
He ran the license plate and learned the vehicle had been reported stolen from the Halton region a week earlier.
During a standard search of the car, Ramundo noticed a piece of paper on the driver’s side – a McDonald’s receipt dated July 20, located just 500 yards from the roadside.
From the Vehicle to the Drive‑Thru
Ramundo headed to the nearby McDonald’s, where employees offered him access to their video footage.
Reviewing the drive‑thru cameras, he saw the same black Explorer pull up, and the driver’s face was clear enough for him to recognize the teen from previous encounters.
The visual match gave officers the lead they needed to connect the abandoned vehicle to a specific suspect.
Identifying the Suspect
The 16‑year‑old male, protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was located at his home only two hours after the vehicle was found abandoned.
Officers arrested him without incident; he appeared “very relaxed” and “cooperative,” even asking to view the video that had helped identify him.
Ramundo noted that his recent work on a stolen‑car project and his familiarity with the youth made the identification immediate.
Arrest and Charges
The teen was charged with one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and one count of failing to comply with a youth detention order.
